VHG Exclusive Interview With Hockey East All-Rookie Team Member Abby Newhook

Posted on February 25, 2022

16 goals. 6 GWG’s. 6 Rookie-of-the-Week Awards. 1 All-Rookie Team Nomination. Not a bad freshman season for Boston College Eagles forward and VHG program attendee Abby Newhook. Before loading up the muskets for the opening round of her playoffs, the youngest Newhook sibling sat down and shot the s*^t with Coach AP about everything from hockey to potato chips. Here we go.

*** Since the Zoom video did not record…. dun dun dun… here’s our best attempt to re-create what went down on Thursday night in an interview between Coach AP and Hockey East All-Rookie Team Forward Abby Newhook. Would also like to point out that Maddy Fillier played male U15 AAA hockey for the Tri-Pen Ice back in 2019-20, so my segment about Leah Wicks on YouTube earlier this week was wrong. I f^&*ked up folks! I’m owning it. Maddy now plays for the Ridley Tigers, and will garner plenty of D1 college interest soon! ***

AP: You’ve been enamoured by the city of Boston for a long time… your whole family has! What’s the connection?

AN: My moms best friend lives in the town of Sandwich, so we have been travelling down there to visit her over the years. Then my brother started playing for Boston College so that connected me to the city as well. Boston is a really nice city.

AP: Choice of vehicle…. Lambo or a 2015(ish) ‘Rolla?

AN: I think you’re being generous on the year, it’s more like a 2007-2008 model. AUX cord, manual locks, manual windows, you name it. Scattered knick in the bumper too (smiles). But I think I’d go with the Lambo”

AP: Will there be a WNHL, and if so, what year?

AN: I think in like 10-15 years there will be, but not to the same scale as the NHL. There will be a lot less money being paid to players. I’d love to see it though

AP: Hannah Bilka – let’s talk about her role in your development and the success you guys have shared as line mates

AN: Not only is Hannah a really good player who can do crazy things on the ice, she’s also super helpful off the ice. She’s a great friend and really helps you in a lot of ways; I am really lucky to have her, such a great person and team mate, has made my transition to college hockey so much easier!

AP: Roasted chicken potato chips… what’s your issue with them?

AN: They don’t taste like any other chips, they’re gross. I don’t know how people can buy a bag of those (makes a face suggesting that Roasted Chicken Lay’s chips are not in her dorm room)

AP: You do realize that Lay’s would pull them out of the portfolio if they didn’t sell, right? Someone out there is buying them!

AN: That’s just weird (laughs)

AP: Rock, paper or scissors in a best-of-5 winner take all match-up?

AN: Rock, all the way. Does anyone choose scissors in a rubber match? C’mon! (throws down a rock to give us an idea of her rock-paper-scissors motion)

AP: I don’t think I know a person out there that would go scissors in a winner-take-all game of RPS. Anyone who does is just a wildcard in life

AN: Like someone who chooses roasted chicken chips!

AP: Ryan Power has trained you for years. Let’s talk about the man they call Tarzan

AN: Ryan has been awesome for my development. He’s always been flexible with me whether I want to work out early or later in the day. I’ve been training with him since I was in Grade 6 or something like that. He pushes me to be my best and he’s always challenging me to make me better

AP: Describe a day in the life at BC on a non-game day

AN: 2 classes in the morning, followed by breakfast (usually oatmeal and a hard-boiled egg). Then it’s hot tub, then practice, then cold tub (we have both within our athletic facilities, pretty cool). I do a lot of film study before bed in the evening. We play Maine tomorrow, so before I go to bed tonight I’ll watch some tape and watch my shifts against them, we have cool software that allows us to watch only our shifts, goals/assists, shots on goal, and so on

AP: I’m way too big of a pussy to get in a cold tub. Moving on.

AP: Best athlete in the Newhook family is… ___?

AN: I’m going with Alex…

AP: No way… you have to go Skin (Shawn) he’s a gym teacher! The man would clean house in paddle tennis

AN: You’re right, he can pick up just about anything and be good at it. Sneaky good athlete

AP: 3 things you’d like to pass on to the next generation of female players from NL… and, go!

AN: Dream big; you can accomplish a lot of things if you put your mind to it and work at it. Next, don’t be afraid to talk to people (network). Write coaches and programs, promote yourself! Last, don’t be afraid to advocate for injustice; the girls on our team, if we feel that female sports are getting overlooked, we feel that we should speak up about it (in a professional manner).

AP: Why is your autograph so bad?

AN: It’s not good, our media person came to the back of the bus one day and asked for my signature for the graphics and I was like oh no! Alex was showing me a few things but clearly I have a long way to go

AP: Your signature looks like a finger painting

AN: (crickets)

Special thanks to Abby Newhook for taking the time out of her busy schedule to do this with us!
