AnalysisDay 1

*** The Cape Breton Eagles have been moving everything that isn’t nailed to the floor since the Q trade period opened, and their firewagon style moved to the draft table. Cape Breton managed to turn 2 first round picks into 3, and landed 3 very good players in Lavoie, Shields and Desruisseaux. As a matter of fact, I had ’em all in my top-10

*** Rouyn Noranda go a little off the board with the selection of Bill Zonnon at pick number 6, but I absolutely love the choice. Zonnon – if he lengthens his skating stride – is a future NHLer in my opnion. He’s got silky mitts, a great motor and goes to the right places without the rock.

*** Chicoutimi took their lunch and supper to the podium tonight, as they seemed to be selecting every other time. The Sags must have some insider info, as both Boisvert and Veilleux are either tendered to the USHL or have publicly admitted to being wishy-washy about reporting to the QMJHL. We will see.

*** Elliot L’italien goes to the Armada, and the beat goes on. It just seems like every other year, BB are in the mix and this value pick at #8 will make them instantly better.

*** Moncton trade into the first and select Adam Fortier-Gendron, which is good value at pick 14.

*** Not sure if Kearsey is telling teams he won’t report, but Anthony Pare going ahead of him is a shoestring reach. I mean no disrespect to Pare, it’s just that Kearsey should have been drafted today. Not tomorrow, today.

*** This could be a great draft for Chicoutimi, or could also be a massive flop. Jeremy Leroux was at Chicago Steel camp in June, along with Boisvert and Veilleux having US ties.

Analysis – Day 2

*** The fact that Marcus Kearsey went at pick 32 is criminal. Charlottetown go back-to-back in the 2nd and get 2 guys who can help them. Michaud’s skating might be a knock on him, but he’s smart and goes to good places in the offensive zone without the puck. There’s no way there are 31 players better than Marcus Kearsey in this draft class, and we will revisit this article down the road when I am proven right.

*** Boisbriand continue to knock their draft out of the park with one of my favourites from the Q Cup Vincent Desjardins in Round 2, then following it with Eric Halliday in Round 3.

*** Charlottetown have been really good since Jim Hulton took over, and the Isles lay the groundwork for a bright future with the drafting of Matty Butler (Round 5, Pick 81). A Butler-Kearsey 1-3-1 PP was lethal @ the Q Cup, and could very well be lethal at the Eastlink Centre some day.

*** Anthony Savoie in the 6th round is good value. In my opinion, Savoie was the best ’06 goaltender in the Maritimes all season but was playing on a weaker team.

*** It’s obvious that Sam Ledrew is going prep school, because he should have been drafted ahead of Round 7. Ledrew is a good hockey player, make no bones about it.

*** As I mentioned in one of the above articles, Rimouski have an entirely different draft board than everyone else and this year has been no different. Just about every pick has been ahead of my projection except for the NS stud Quinn Kennedy. As they say in the movie ‘Dodgeball’ – ‘it’s a bold strategy Cotton, lets see how it plays out for them’

*** I like Halifax’s draft so far. Landing a top-2 round talent in Taillefer in the 4th, I like the Levesque pick in Round 5 (kid plays with a motor and is such a rat), and Huddy Clarke in the 8th. It’s time to pull the trigger on Cole Cooper and/or Carter Hynes though.

*** Great finish to the day, with Kyle Greene (Halifax), Carter Hynes (Quebec), and Nolan Avery (Charlottetown) all going in the final round of the draft.
